L.A. County leaders to weigh legal action following violent ICE arrests

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis stated that she wants the county to investigate a legal counterattack against what she called the federal government’s unconstitutional immigration enforcement practices, citing a recent arrest by immigration agents that resulted in a man being bloodied in the unincorporated area of Valinda.

According to a statement released on Saturday, Solis intends to co-sponsor a motion at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting requesting that the county attorney investigate all legal options available to the County in order to safeguard our citizens’ civil rights and stop federal law enforcement from enforcing any illegal or unconstitutional immigration enforcement practices.

According to the motion, this type of behavior includes stopping, questioning, or detaining people without a reasonable suspicion, as well as making an arrest without a proper warrant or probable cause.

The violent arrest of a man in unincorporated Valinda gravely disturbs me as these immigration raids continue to frighten our communities. According to a statement from Solis, whose district includes Eagle Rock and Pomona, “this incident raises serious concerns about the conduct and legality of these actions and demonstrates a violation of constitutional rights and due process.”

To prevent their constituents from being racially profiled or jailed without warrants, seven council members want the city attorney to take urgent legal action.

The motion claims that the region’s normally busy public spaces have been cleared out by the Trump administration’s continuous crackdown on undocumented immigrants, which has caused widespread panic. People are skipping doctor’s appointments, going to work, and going to grocery stores and restaurants.

According to the motion, this has had a severe detrimental effect on the county’s economy as well as its capacity to ensure the health and welfare of its citizens.

A similar proposal to forbid federal officials from conducting unlawful stops, searches, or arrests of city dwellers was introduced by the L.A. City Council earlier this month.

According to federal officials, agents are protecting themselves from increasingly hostile crowds that are sometimes interfering with arrests.

Politics

Some immigrants are trying to live off the grid, while others are digitizing significant parts of their life because they are afraid to leave their houses.

Prominent figures, including Kristi Noem, the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, have contended that the government’s raids are aimed at criminals who have been on our streets for an excessive amount of time. However, a subsequent Times analysis indicated that most of the people arrested in early June were not convicted of any crimes.

Videos of federal officials, frequently wearing masks, aggressively arresting witnesses who are recording their acts, dragging a taco stand vendor by her arm, and throwing smoke bombs into a gathering of irate onlookers have been all over social media for weeks. As part of what opponents have described as a worrisome escalation in methods, one widely shared video showed federal law enforcement personnel accompanied by a military-style vehicle during an apparent raid at a Compton home earlier this month.

Although it’s unclear if any rounds were fired, footage seen by The Times shows a person in the vehicle’s turret directing what looks to be a less-lethal projectile launcher downward.

Witnesses and footage from the June 9 immigration raid in Compton show that a military-style vehicle was deployed.

Solis mentioned another federal operation that was featured in a widely shared video in her statement.

A bystander captured the clip, which ABC 7 was able to use. It shows federal officers wearing tactical vests and masks smashing the windows of a big white pickup truck and then seemingly removing a man from the vehicle.

Later, while a swarm of bystanders calls for the man’s release, several agents are seen kneeling on top of the man, who appears to have a head wound and is bleeding. In one film, the man’s face is pushed into the pavement by an agent.
