After the City Council decided to raise ticket rates beginning next month, a trip to the Los Angeles Zoo may soon cost you a few extra bucks.

An ordinance that will increase basic zoo entry rates by $5 was unanimously approved by council members on Friday. The decision was made months after a $14 billion spending plan that was adopted by elected leaders to address the city’s economic crisis for the fiscal year 2025–2026.

The admission rates shown below take effect on July 1st: The cost of admission is $22 for kids aged 2 to 12 and $27 for adults ages 13 and up. Senior tickets will cost $24 for people 62 and up.

In an effort to help restore the state’s declining condor population, the Los Angeles Zoo announced this week that ten healthy condors had hatched and were ready for release into the wild.

According to the L.A. City Controller, the zoo’s original funding came from a bond measure that voters authorized in 1956 to build a facility to replace the Griffith Park Zoo, which had opened in 1912 and was running out of capacity.

In 1966, the L.A. Zoo opened.

The council has previously authorized raising the cost of tickets. At a time when adult admission to the San Diego Zoo costs $40, ticket prices increased by $2 in 2012, starting at $16. Adult admission to the San Diego Zoo is $76 for a single day today.

One Reddit user stated that the zoo’s budget is tight and that hiking rates is the only option to increase money. Would you mind comparing the costs at the Los Angeles Zoo, which is accessible to locals, and the San Diego Zoo, a popular tourist destination? The L.A. Zoo is run on a different level, and that is the point.

In her first proposed city budget, Mayor Karen Bass called for a one-time budget cut of $500,000 in part-time staffing and the elimination of 53 zoo jobs, or around 19% of the zoo’s workforce.Denise Verret, the director and chief executive of the L.A. Zoo, wrote to the council’s Budget, Finance, and Innovation Committee, stating that these changes would negatively impact the visitor experience and put a lot of strain on staff.

Verret suggested bringing back 10 filled and 1 open positions. The authorized budget for the city will take effect on July 1.
