Street race involving teen, driver with kids in car turns deadly in Chula Vista

Chula Vista police say a street race between a teenager and a dad who had two kids in the car on Monday night ended in death.

Around 7:40 p.m., a Toyota Corolla and a Hyundai Elantra were “involved in a street race” eastbound on Palomar Street in Chula Vista when the Corolla crashed, according to multiple witnesses who spoke to Chula Vista police.

Investigators found that the 17-year-old driver of the Corolla lost control while making a curve, slammed up a curb, and collided with a palm tree, causing the car to split in two.

The adolescent, whose identity has not yet been made public, was declared deceased at the scene.

According to Chula Vista police, the Elantra’s driver, a 28-year-old man from Chula Vista, pulled over and cooperated with investigators. Two young children were “secured in the back seat” of the vehicle.

According to the agency, no one was hurt in the second car. The second driver is not facing any charges.

Investigations were underway to determine what caused the crash. Alcohol and drugs did not seem to play a role.
