In an effort to reduce the number of young men who commit suicide and to make them feel less alone, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order on Wednesday that aims to support men and boys and improve their mental health outcomes.
The decision instructs the state’s Health and Human treatments Agency to make recommendations on how to reduce the number of young men who commit suicide and assist them in obtaining treatments that will enhance their mental health and general well-being. Additionally, it mandates that the state link them to employment and educational possibilities.

Too many boys and men are suffering in silence because they are cut off from their families, their communities, and their opportunities. Democrat Newsom said in a statement. The goal of this activity is to change that. It’s about demonstrating to each young man that he matters and that he has a path toward job, dignity, purpose, and genuine connection.
Since the election last year, when the party lost young men to President Donald Trump, who used a large portion of his campaign to appeal to men who felt denigrated by the nation’s political system, economics, and culture, the topic has gained more attention from Democrats. According to AP VoteCast, a survey of over 120,000 voters, more than half of men under 30 voted for Trump, although four years prior, Democrat Joe Biden garnered a comparable percentage of that demographic.

On his podcast, Newsom, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, has discussed the importance of helping boys and men. His guests have mostly been men, including Democratic lawmakers, book authors, and MAGA personalities.
In order to better address their needs, he published an episode on Wednesday with Richard Reeves, the president and founder of the American Institute for Boys and Men, a group that studies issues impacting men’s well-being. “It’s a crucial issue to address beyond just discussing it as a political hurdle for Democrats,” Newsom stated at the start of the show.

According to Newsom’s order, the state must work to encourage more men and boys to serve their communities by establishing volunteer programs and providing support paths for more male students to pursue careers as school counselors and teachers. Along with a plan to help enhance student outcomes, state agencies must suggest strategies to encourage more young men to enroll in state career education and training programs. Officials have two months to give an update.

According to the CDC, California has one of the lowest suicide rates in the nation in 2023. The total suicide death rate in the United States was 14.1, whereas the suicide mortality rate was approximately 10.2.
