A discussion with Family Health Center of San Diego is being held Monday by several local Democratic lawmakers to talk about the potential effects of the newly enacted “big beautiful bill” on healthcare in the future.

The conversation, which is being hosted by Representatives Sara Jacobs and Scott Peters, focuses on how President Donald Trump’s tax plan might alter the health care sector.

According to Peters, the tax plan alters the way student loans are managed, which will ultimately result in fewer medical school students and physicians.

“The One Big Beautiful Bill Act eliminates the Graduate PLUS program, sets new limits on student loan borrowing, and makes drastic changes to loan repayment plans that limit options for new borrowers,” according to a statement issued by his office.”

According to Peters, in addition to making the physician shortage worse, the plan might push hospitals to collapse due to Medicaid cuts, which would result in further health issues down the road.

President Trump’s new tax plan will cut Medicaid by more than $1 trillion over the next ten years and require adults to confirm twice a year that they are working 80 hours per month, attending school, or performing community service. The majority of the modifications won’t be implemented until 2027, following the midterm elections.

Medical students, coordinators of residency programs, and leaders of pediatric education programs will join the Representatives.
