When a bunch of people get together to engage in a lighthearted, upbeat, and little crazy idea, pretty much anything is possible, even something wonderful. About 30 close friends experienced this magic in 2013 when they went to Morro Bay for the inaugural Witches Paddle, an October-style outing that focused on camaraderie, smiles, and a little supernatural fun. As with everything wonderful, the paddle, which was just meant to be a one-time event, developed over time, and in 2024? Approximately 600 witches, warlocks, and several incredibly adorable puppies arrived to create a delightful and seasonal spectacle. The 2025 event has been scheduled, and there’s something particularly exciting about it: it’s the thirteenth year, and hundreds of mystical creatures are anticipated to be present.

In 2019, the event evolved into a fundraiser, with the paddle’s beneficiary being the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County. In honor of these courageous paddlers, anyone is welcome to attend the festive event on October 25, 2025, or make a donation to the food bank. And if you just want to visit and see the whimsy? You’re welcome to do so. Many communities have been enchanted by the idea of paddling and/or kayaking witches around Halloween, and you may encounter fanciful creatures on the water in a number of locations across the country, including Ventura. You might really appear at both of the major magical festivities, as the Witches Paddle at Ventura Harbor Village is scheduled for October 24.
