A pursuit started when Carlsbad police officers saw the stolen car heading north on Interstate 5 at La Costa Avenue after deputies sent out a be-on-the-lookout alert about the crime to local law enforcement agencies, according to sheriff’s Sgt. William Clem.

At Leucadia Boulevard and Garden View Road in Encinitas, the suspect quickly off the freeway and ran over a spike strip that cops had placed in his path.

Clem stated that Ash proceeded into Carlsbad despite the fact that the device destroyed at least one tire on the pilfered vehicle. The defendant lost control of the car there at El Camino Real and Faraday Avenue, causing it to collide with a tree, a bus stop, and two other vehicles.

Ash was then taken into custody by Carlsbad police. After receiving treatment for his crash-related injuries at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, he was arrested on accusations of carjacking, eluding police, resisting arrest, and breaking his parole.
