Bob Odenkirk reveals what it would take for him to reprise his ‘Better Call Saul’ role

Fans haven’t seen Bob Odenkirk’s portrayal of the sly and endearing Saul Goodman on Better Call Saul for three long years. The Oscar-winning actor is now talking candidly with TODAY.com about what it would take to play his legendary role again.

After making his debut in the Bryan Cranston-led criminal drama Breaking Bad, Odenkirk’s character was given a spinoff series in 2015, which acted as Saul Goodman’s genesis tale. It followed Jimmy McGill, a criminal defense lawyer from Albuquerque, New Mexico, as he evolved from an ambitious and occasionally morally dubious lawyer with connections to the criminal underworld.

Odenkirk’s character in Better Call Saul, which was created and executive produced by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, the same team behind Breaking Bad, served an 86-year prison sentence after confessing to his crimes, which included aiding Walter White’s (Cranston) drug operation and admitting his involvement in his brother Howard’s death.

Odenkirk discusses his ideas for a Better Call Saul sequel and the specific plot of his character in an exclusive interview with TODAY.com on August 14.

He will not be released from prison. He states unequivocally that if there is another Saul show, it will be set inside a prison and would chronicle Saul’s life there.

Having portrayed Saul Goodman for more than ten years on both AMC series, Odenkirk acknowledges the influence his role has had on him on a personal and professional level. He claims that part changed his life and that he has contributed more to it than to anything else.

He acknowledges the stress it has had on him, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he is okay with letting go of Saul after years of portraying him alongside his highly adept assassin character, Hutch, from Nobody.

Odenkirk told the source, “They’re guys who have pretty big chips on their shoulders for different reasons, and that’s hard to play after a while.” That guy can’t be carried around all the time.

However, a “Better Call Saul” comeback is not completely out of the question, Odenkirk tells TODAY.com. In an exclusive interview, the actor reveals what it would take to return to the Better Call Saul universe and play the same role.

That show was conceived by Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan. He claims that some of the greatest authors in TV history have contributed to the medium. Therefore, I would definitely do it if they came out with something in that scenario.

Odenkirk acknowledges that he would accept the task, but he believes it may be a long shot.

“But I don’t think so,” he continues, referring to a spinoff or sequel to Better Call Saul. They’ve all probably moved on to some more incredible projects, which you’ll see shortly.

Odenkirk is referring to Gilligan’s upcoming sci-fi drama Pluribus on Apple TV+, which stars Rhea Seehorn, who co-starred with Gilligan in Better Call Saul.

The show is a psychological sci-fi thriller set in a reinvented version of modern-day Albuquerque, and it has already been picked up by Apple TV+ for two seasons. Despite the lack of formal storyline specifics, Odenkirk tells TODAY.com that the new show will be fantastic.

He teases the upcoming series, saying, “Look forward to the best written show on TV for years to come.”

Odenkirk’s latest action movie, Nobody 2, is currently showing in theaters around the country, but fans will have to wait until November 7 to watch Pluribus on the big screen.
