Dozens attend “Fight the Trump Takeover” rally in Otay Ranch

On Saturday, dozens of demonstrators assembled outside the Otay Ranch Town Center to voice their opposition to the policies of the Trump administration. This weekend’s nationwide “Fight the Trump Takeover” events include a number of protests in San Diego County and across the United States.

“We are all on the same page and we are growing,” the protest’s organizer, Janine Manchel, stated.

Manchel is a member of the countrywide grassroots movement Indivisible, which exists only to oppose the policies of the Trump administration.

“You make one if you can’t find one, which is what I did. Since I reside in Bonita and I wasn’t finding much here, it’s really a crucial area to cover,” Manchel stated.

Since April of this year, Manchel has been planning demonstrations such as the one on Saturday. She and a core group of at least 20 people attend each week to express their disapproval of the White House’s policies, which range from immigration to Texas Republicans’ attempt to redraw the state’s congressional maps.

“We’re here in solidarity with the Texas Dems who have walked out of — to do the quorum, so they left the state,” Manchel added.

According to Manchel, she supports California Governor Gavin Newsom’s intention to “fight fire with fire,” which means that if Texas Republicans proceed with their plan to alter the state’s congressional boundaries, Governor Newsom ought to do the same.

Manchel and her friends intend to keep planning demonstrations to express their disapproval of the Trump administration’s policies, regardless of the result. In the upcoming weeks, the group intends to schedule other demonstrations against the Texas redistricting plans.
