Nick Pivetta, the Padres’ most productive starting pitcher so far this season, dominated the first three innings before crashing in the fourth. In addition to loading the bases on a single and two walks, Boston also scored a run on a sacrifice fly, Pivetta’s mishandled pickoff throw, and two more when Wilyer Abreu hit a two-run homer to end a four-run inning and give Pivetta his first East Village defeat.
In an attempt to prevent things from becoming worse, Shane Reynolds entered the game in the eighth inning with a score of 5-0. The large right-hander encountered numerous difficulties. After walking the bases loaded, Reynolds hit catcher Connor Wong with a three-run double to make it 8-0. Reynolds managed to get five outs, but he gave up five walks and five runs.

When a well-known player rejoins the rotation on Saturday night, San Diego will attempt to win this game and tie the series. Lucas Giolito faces Michael King, who has been sidelined since May due to a neurological problem.
