Shooting at Emory University’s Atlanta campus leaves officer injured, suspect dead

The suspect was killed in a shooting at the Atlanta campus of Emory University on Friday, which also injured an officer.

Shortly following the gunshot, DeKalb County communications director Dionna Smith said that an officer had been hurt and was on his way to the Emory hospital. On Friday night, Atlanta police declared the suspect dead.

According to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, 92 children were at a daycare on the CDC facility in Atlanta when a gunshot occurred close by.

The event did not result in any civilians being shot. Dickens confirmed the children were safe.

According to CDC staff, bullets hit the windows of multiple buildings on their adjacent site.

Employees at a deli close to campus huddled down inside and locked the doors. Staffers inside heard a series of gunshots, according to General Muir’s chief operations officer, Brandy Giraldo.

She claimed that it sounded like a series of fireworks going off one after the other.

At a press conference, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated that the suspect died from gunshot wounds.

He added that when the incident occurred, officers discovered the suspect with gunshot wounds, and he passed away at the site from those wounds.

It was unclear if the subject hurt himself or if the responding police were to blame.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp stated on X that “innocent Georgians have been the target of deranged criminals twice this week.”

He expressed gratitude to the “brave first responders” that “rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are.”

“We ask that you join us in holding them in our prayers, along with those harmed this evening near the CDC Center,” he continued.

On Wednesday, an active-duty soldier opened fire on an Army installation in Georgia, wounding five service members before being apprehended by onlookers and placed under arrest, according to a military official.
