According to the Pew Research Center’s most recent data, the number of immigrants in the United States is declining for the first time in over 50 years, while residents born abroad choose to leave the country or are deported.

The number of immigrants in the United States will reach a maximum of 53,3 million by the year 2025. This number decreased by 2.6% to reach 51,9 million in June 2025, marking the first decline in the number of immigrants in the United States since 1960.

In other words, according to a recent Pew report, there are currently 1.4 million fewer immigrants living in the country just months after President Donald Trump took office.

Mark Hugo L. Pez, director of research on race and ethnicity at the Pew Research Center, stated that a number of factors could be contributing to the decline in population, including the policy changes that started under the Biden administration and implemented new restrictions on immigration by 2024.

There are a number of potential causes, including the natural migration and migration of immigrants as well as political policies that have hindered border crossings and increased use of the law in the United States, all of which may be affecting the number of immigrants and their growth or decline, said L. Pez.

According to Pew researchers, a record number of immigrants—more than 11 million—will arrive in the United States between 2020 and 2025. According to Pew’s analysis of government data sources, this includes more than 3 million people in 2023 alone, the highest annual number ever recorded.

According to data, the number of undocumented immigrants, or those without full legal permission to be in the United States, will reach 14 million by 2023.

The organization and analysis of data from the Office of the Censo’s actual monthly population surveys. According to the researchers, the recent trend toward a decline in the estimated total number of immigrants in the United States may be due in part to the fact that fewer immigrants participated in the survey.

California has the nation’s highest immigration rate. In 2023, California was home to 11.3 million immigrants, or 28.4% of the country’s overall population. With about 6 million foreign-born residents, Texas has the second-largest immigrant population, followed by Florida and New York.

With 2.3 million undocumented immigrants, California also has the highest number. The state is the epicenter of Trump’s repression, and his high-profile administration in Los Angeles issues directives that impact state protections and benefits for immigrants.

At the beginning of this week, their administration criticized a state law that permits undocumented immigrants to obtain driving licenses, accusing California politicians of being responsible for a fatal accident in Florida that was allegedly caused by a driver who was not in the country legally. The conductor has a federal work permit.

During the first 100 days of Trump’s second term, the president implemented more than 100 executive actions pertaining to immigration, with the goal of blocking the entry of new migrants and refugees to the border, denying temporary protections to those who entered legally, and deporting undocumented immigrants.

Trump has made some of the most significant changes to American immigration policy in the nation’s history, announcing a massive deportation campaign with an estimated goal of one million deportations in the first year.

The Pew study does not disclose the most recent deportation figures, but it does indicate that some immigrants may have left the country voluntarily as a result of Trump’s administration’s repression. Their administration has sent people to a maximum security prison in El Salvador, where the detainees claim to have suffered torture. Authorities have deported people to countries where they have never lived, such as Panama and South America, which the Department of State of the European Union considers to be dangerous. Federal immigration agents in Los Angeles and other parts of California have been violently handling immigrants and U.S. citizens, throwing them on the ground and causing them to break into cars.

Pew discovered that between January and June, the number of immigrants decreased as a result of changes in laws and policies. Since 1960, the non-autorizados’ border crossings have been reduced in number.According to statistics from the US government, the number of migrants detained at the border between the US and Mexico decreased by little less than 8,000 in July compared to over 96.000 in December, the last month of Biden’s presidency.

This time, Trump has focused his control efforts on the inside of the country, supporting military and vigilance tactics to strengthen the border and relieve the Patrulla Fronteriza agents of it.

According to the Pew report, a significant portion of immigrants in the United States—roughly 75%—are legally present here.

In 2023, 46% of immigrants were naturalized citizens of the United States. Nearly one-fourth were legal permanent residents or those in possession of a green visa, and the remaining 4% were legal temporary residents who were allowed to remain in the United States for a limited period of time, usually to work or study.

The remaining immigrants in the United States fell under the category of non-autorizados and made up 27% of all immigrants in that country.

Around 40% of undocumented immigrants—roughly 6 million people—have some form of temporary protection against deportation, and some also have permission to work lawfully in the United States.

These protections were imposed by the Trump administration on the half a million legal immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela who entered the United States.

The immigrants’ countries of origin have also changed in recent years. A growing proportion comes from South America and Europe, while a decreasing proportion comes from Asia and the Farthest Sub-Saharan region. However, over one-fourth (24%) of the shipments between 2021 and 2023 came from the southern and eastern regions of Asia.

The main countries of entry for immigrants between 2021 and 2023 were Mexico (11%), India (8%), Venezuela (7%), Cuba (6%), and Colombia (5%).
