On Saturday, SeaWorld San Diego will reopen the renovated Journey to Atlantis ride to the public following a protracted hiatus.
Towering over Mission Bay, the ride has been one of the park’s most noticeable non-animal attractions since it opened as San Diego’s first water coaster in 2004. According to a park statement, the new version of the attraction “fuses heart-pounding drops and exhilarating splashes with fresh, dynamic storytelling.”

The S.E.A. Collective (Science. Exploration. Adventure.), a “daring crew of young scientists and explorers,” who come to Mission Bay with the intention of discovering the ancient mysteries of Atlantis, are incorporated into the new story. The site claims that while waiting in line, visitors will hear mission chatter from the S.E.A. Collective and see expedition plans and clues to locate the fabled Kraken.
“This summer, we can’t wait to reopen Journey to Atlantis for our guests,” stated Tyler Carter, president of SeaWorld San Diego Park. “During a pleasant day at the park, many people use this ride to cool off. As a guest favorite, it’s fascinating to observe how our fans respond to the additions and changes made to the ride, which turn it into a fantastic journey.
The legend of the underwater island, a trip to Atlantis (thus the ride’s name), an unexpected and unwanted visitor, and the escape from it are all covered in the three chapters of the story, Discovery, Descent, and Escape. The ride has coaster and flume components.
Guests ride in eight-seater boats on this hybrid ride, which includes a final plunge into a splash pool, bends, and a chain lift hill. 42 inches is the minimum height requirement.
