The Maryland State Fire Marshal has charged a man with serious offenses, including arson, for purposefully starting a fire inside his house while his wife and two kids were sleeping.

At 5 a.m. on Friday, Charles County police were called to a domestic dispute at a residence on the 3000 block of Eutaw Forest Drive in Waldorf, Maryland.

According to police, Omar Shariff Harrison, 49, and his wife got into a domestic argument Thursday night, which is why they were summoned to the same residence. The pair decided to stay in different areas of the house that same evening.

According to authorities, Harrison’s wife reported that she woke up at around five in the morning on Friday to hear Harrison wandering around the house. Then, she claimed, Harrison went into their bedroom and began dousing the bed where she was sleeping with gasoline.

Then he lit the bed linens on fire and poured gasoline down the steps. After safely leaving the house, Harrison’s wife and children dialed 911.

Harrison sparked the fire but put it out, according to deputy state fire marshals. Harrison allegedly threatened to set the house on fire, and police determined that the incident was connected to the ongoing marital conflict. After the fire was extinguished, the house sustained only little damage.

Following a traffic stop, Harrison was brought to the Charles County Detention Center and placed under arrest.
