Idleness has never been Fay Bond’s style. Now, not much has changed despite her age.
Bond was a walking club member, a passionate gardener, and a water aerobics and stretch instructor for approximately 50 years. Bond and her husband were the first to sign up for the local health club when it debuted in their hometown of Oriental, North Carolina, decades ago.

Instead of referring to herself as athletic, she says she has simply been in sync with her body for over a century. She tells TODAY.com, “I’ve always known when I’ve needed to be active and lose a little weight or gain a little weight.”
Bond will make his fourth appearance in the discus, long jump, and shot put competitions at the 2025 National Senior Games this month at the age of 101. This year’s games take place in Des Moines in July and August, with over 12,400 competitors ranging in age from 50 to 105 competing.

At the age of 90, Bond’s daughter, Irma Bond, who is also competing, took her mother to the games. Fay Bond won’t waste time worrying about how she’ll fare because she doesn’t know. She is prepared to add another record to her increasing collection and win more medals. Or she’ll try, anyway.
She advises getting in and doing it if you see something and decide, “Well, I think I could do that.” It’s the guidance she has consistently provided her kids and the attitude she has long upheld.
Fay Bond’s top advice for leading a long and active life is provided below.

Invest in your health
Irma Bond tells TODAY.com that Mom has always been concerned about her health. According to her, we never had cookies or soda pops, and her mother frequently canned her own veggies.
Fay Bond never drank or smoked, and her favorite foods are fish and chicken, frequently with sweet potatoes, oatmeal with strawberries, and chicken salad on a pita with tomatoes. She avoids red meat and will only eat fruit and yogurt as snacks.
Irma Bond credits her own athleticism to her observation of her mother’s body maintenance practices. Irma Bond, 75, runs every morning and will be competing in her age division’s 100-meter race at this year’s games. Her brother, who won the slalom water skiing national championship at the age of 78 last year, is traveling to California this year.
Build community
By doing what she enjoys, Fay Bond makes friends. She pickedled watermelon rinds to contribute to the neighborhood, played bridge, joined a walking club, and danced with her spouse.
According to Irma Bond, she has always been gregarious. She is referred to as Oriental’s sweetheart. Following the games on August 10, Fay Bond will hold her 55th annual watermelon cutting in the front yard, inviting everyone in the neighborhood to join in and enjoy some food.
Say yes
Up until the age of 99, Fay Bond lived alone. Three years ago, Irma moved her mother in with her when she began to feel confused about things.
They’re game for anything together. According to Irma Bond, we simply love life and live. Mom has always been a really upbeat individual. (She) likes to do and be. I do my best to keep her entertained.
She went swimming in the sound and canoeing with her mother last weekend. The mother-daughter team will make an activity happen if it interests them.
Be positive
Irma Bond remembers that Norman Vincent Peal, the author of The Power of Positive Thinking, was introduced to me by my mother. Probably more than anything else, that helped me grow up.
The Bonds have discovered that life isn’t lengthy for everyone. While her sister survived to be 96 and her aunt lived to be 103, other family members did not live as long. Fay Bond will turn 102 in September. Mother and daughter are dedicated to finding the positive aspects of each day.
Have something to look forward to
Because the games provide them with a goal, Fay and Irma are appreciative of them.
The Bonds think that you should always give yourself something to look forward to. You can’t get any better than that since it truly offers us something to aim for, anticipate, and keep in condition for.
