Some people may even remember it with fondness in their vague recollections: The AOL dial-up internet service, which people of a certain age identify with the World Wide Web, is ending.
On its website, the company—also famed for its “You’ve got mail” greeting and the CD sample discs—announced the news.

“Dial-up Internet will no longer be offered by AOL, which regularly reviews its offerings. “AOL plans will no longer offer this service,” the web providers stated.
Dial-up made a characteristic, high-pitched chirping sound while connecting to the internet via a traditional telephone line in the absence of the wireless signals of today.

The dial-up service, AOL Dialer software, and AOL Shield browser will all be withdrawn on September 30th, according to AOL, which is now a part of Yahoo.
During the 1990s, when the internet was becoming more and more popular in homes across the US and beyond, America Online was well-known for its free trial disks.
In 2006, it rebranded itself as just AOL. In 2021, Verizon sold Yahoo and AOL to Apollo Global Management, a private equity firm, for $5 billion.
