SAN DIEGO (AP) In the second inning of Monday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants, manager Mike Shildt was removed for walking out of the dugout to speak with the umpires, and Xander Bogaerts’ home run was overruled because of fan interference.
The Padres lost 4-3, thus the call proved to be crucial.

Two spectators, one wearing a Giants shirt, rushed for Bogaerts’ flyball to left field, which seemed to bounce off of Heliot Ramos’ glove and over the fence. After a thorough review, it was determined that the home run decision was reversed and Bogaerts was called out because the ball may have clipped one of the fans’ arms. As soon as Shildt emerged from the dugout, he was ejected.
For the remainder of the inning, fans jeered.
No interaction. It was a significant run. “Wonderful,” Shildt said. Listen, I don’t often criticize the league, but the definition we received from the replay made it quite evident that an obstacle had occurred. He obviously didn’t touch the baseball. And why does it take two minutes and forty seconds to figure it out if it’s so obvious? What are you trying to find? Overturn it early if it’s so obvious; else, it’s a home run.
Going that far and having to reach a determination that isn’t definitive enough to overturn a home run is just incredibly disheartening. We lost the chance to win a baseball game because of that. I had a lot of free time, and I would want to see if you can locate a view where the baseball was touched by the fan.
Ramos wasn’t shocked that the call was reversed.

I thought I had it easier than that, but as I was going to grab it, I noticed that his arm was kind of over me, so I assume it struck his arm or something. He was literally over me, and his entire body was across the wall, however the playback just shows the guy at the bottom, not the guy at the top. It only slightly cut the finger. He had his hands up before the ball reached my glove.
Ramos claimed that the fan partially obscured his vision because I could see his shadow approaching me and was a little perplexed.
According to Giants manager Bob Melvin, the fan seemed to reach over. It merely nicked him, I believe. In any case, your hand covering it can also impair his vision. That call doesn’t come around very frequently, but I believe it was the right one.
The Giants took a 4-0 lead after Ramos blasted a leadoff homer against Nestor Cortes, one of three home runs in the first five batters.
