Due to an increase in violence throughout the state, authorities in nine California prisons lifted limitations on inmate travel and suspended privileges on Thursday.
According to a statement released Thursday by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, twelve additional facilities are still under lockdown.
The 21 jails were placed on what CDCR referred to as a modified regimen on June 12. Except for necessary services like legal and medical appointments, inmates at the state’s highest-security facilities were confined to their cells and were not allowed to visit or call.
According to CDCR officials, an increase in drug overdoses and violence was the reason for the lockdown. According to CDCR data, 41 California inmates died under mysterious circumstances, including suspected drug overdoses, and 13 inmates were killed by other convicts this year.
According to CDCR officials, investigators have used dogs to search cells, examined incoming mail, and combed through video recordings in the past two weeks in an effort to find contraband. According to the statement, among other contraband, the inspections uncovered 310 cellphones and 169 firearms.
California Medical Facility, California Men’s Colony, California Correctional Institution, Folsom State Prison, North Kern State Prison, Pleasant Valley State Prison, Wasco State Prison, California State Prison, Corcoran, and Solano all had restrictions lifted on Thursday.
The following prisons still have inmates under lockdown: California State Prison, Los Angeles County; California State Prison, Sacramento; California State Prison, Centinela; Calipatria State Prison; Kern Valley State Prison; Mule Creek State Prison; Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility; Salinas Valley State Prison and Sierra Conservation Camp; High Desert State Prison; Pelican Bay State Prison; Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran.
