An expansion team frequently makes it to the Major League Soccer playoffs. Being the first team in the league to earn a postseason berth is a very rare occurrence for a first-year club.
People don’t believe they should be able to do things that San Diego FC has made a habit of doing.

On Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium, SDFC fought Portland to a scoreless draw. While the outcome may not have been entirely pleasing, the one standings point that was earned was sufficient to formally qualify San Diego for the MLS playoffs. With six games remaining in the regular season, they are three points ahead of Minnesota and are the first team in the league to punch their postseason ticket.
For everyone, offense was difficult to come by. Three shots on goal came from both teams combined. In the 32nd minute, SDFC appeared to have scored. After receiving a pass just past midfield, Anders Dreyer ran off without any opposition and added a left-footed goal to his MVP credentials. The goal was removed from the board, though, after a video check showed that Dreyer was offside.
San Diego is only one point behind Philadelphia for the Supporters’ Shield, which is awarded to the team with the greatest regular season record, and is the clear favorite to win the Western Conference. On Sunday, August 31, SDFC will travel up the road to play LAFC in their next game.
