In an interview with CNBC, Mahomes discussed his passion for coffee, his expanding sports real estate holdings, stadium politics in Kansas City, and his thoughts on an 18-game NFL season as the Chiefs and the rest of the NFL prepare for the season.

In May 2024, Mahomes acquired an undisclosed interest in Throne Sport Coffee, making him the second-largest investor.

In addition to being an investor, he now serves as the brand’s primary salesperson, a product tester, and a regular drinker.

“It actually started in my first year in the NFL,” Mahomes said when discussing his coffee addiction with CNBC. Coffee became a utilitarian necessity for me because I attended a lot of meetings. However, I soon came to adore it, particularly black coffee.

He claimed it felt like a natural fit for him when Mike Fedele, the CEO, creator, and seasoned beverage industry veteran, presented him with a ready-to-drink choice intended to offer a healthier caffeine boost.

“I really fell in love with just the taste and trying to make sure that what I was putting into my body was good,” said the man.

Fedele, who has collaborated with well-known companies like BodyArmor and Coca-Cola, claimed that Throne is unique since it contains 40% less sugar and 10 grams of protein than rival products.Throne coffee has one gram of sugar and roughly fifty calories.

In contrast, a Starbucks Frappuccino that is ready to drink can have up to 300 calories and 47 grams of sugar.

“Given how frequently people that care about what they’re putting into their bodies consume coffee, I felt there needed to be a better for you option,” he stated.

According to Mahomes, he consumes three cups of coffee every day: one before waking up, one prior to meetings, and a third before midday preparation.

“It’s probably too much,” he said, “but with Throne, I know I’m putting something clean in my body, no junk, no sugar, and added electrolytes, and B vitamins.”

During game days? “I tone it down to just one or two,” he remarked.

The market for coffee that is ready to drink is expanding quickly. According to Technomic, Americans spent $17.7 billion on the category in 2023.

Even with its potential for expansion, Throne faces competition in a saturated coffee market where rival coffee shops are expanding their ready-to-drink selection.Citing current customer patterns and the category’s growth, Starbucks said this week that it is growing its selection of ready-to-drink beverages.

One component of Mahomes’ expanding investment portfolio is Throne. Along with Alpine F1, the three-time Super Bowl MVP also has minority shares in the MLS’s Sporting Kansas City, the NWSL’s KC Current, and MLB’s Kansas City Royals.

“Sports are something I adore. I adore how they unite individuals in communities and families. “I want to invest in that,” Mahomes stated.

Does that imply that he is considering purchasing a share of the Chiefs in the future?

Saying, “That would be cool,” “I’d love to be a part of the squad when I finish playing, but hopefully a long time from now. They have greatly benefited me.

There is considerable uncertainty around the Chiefs’ stadium future as the team is debating whether to construct a new stadium in Kansas or repair Arrowhead Stadium. Mahomes did not specify the location of the team’s preferred game.

“Arrowhead is unique.” The history is palpable. But the supporters will come wherever we play,” he continued.

Recently, the Chiefs received a one-year extension to decide on their future stadium.

Mahomes stated that he is wary of plans for an 18-game NFL season and foreign expansion, including the Chiefs’ Week 1 match in Brazil, while discussing league-wide matters.

“Playing more games strains the body. We need more bye weeks if we plan to go to 18. Planning is important for international games as well.
