The electrification startup VoltSafeInc. has been formally welcomed by the Port of San Diego as the newest member of its Blue Economy Incubator (BEI). The one-year pilot project was approved by the port’s Board of Port Commissioners on Tuesday, and VoltSafe was given $250,000 to implement its shore power and smart marina technologies.
The BEI was established in 2016 to bring sustainable ocean-based technology to the area, and VoltSafe is the 12th firm to join. The business wants to improve productivity and safety at the port’s marinas by using a magnetic connection technique in place of conventional pronged plugs. The port claims that this innovation lowers the risk of corrosion, electrical shocks, and other dangers that are typical in maritime conditions.

The software in VoltSafe’s system, in addition to its hardware, gives marina owners up-to-date information on power demand and usage at specific slips, enabling a more intelligent and responsive infrastructure solution.
According to Danielle Moore, Chair of the Port Board, innovation is driven by individuals who have the foresight, imagination, and guts to question the current quo. The Port of San Diego is pleased to assist innovative businesspeople who are transforming audacious concepts into practical solutions and building a more sustainable waterfront for everybody through our Blue Economy Incubator.

Trevor Burgess, co-founder and CEO of VoltSafe, described the collaboration as a game-changer for the marine sector.
Partnering with the Port of San Diego’s Blue Economy Incubator, a first for the world, signifies more than simply a milestone; it’s evidence that VoltSafe’s unique shore power technology and SaaS platform aren’t just setting the bar higher—they’re rewriting it, Burgess said. We can provide greater social, economic, and environmental benefits than legacy solutions can. This partnership puts VoltSafe at the forefront of the marine industry’s rush toward smarter, low-carbon infrastructure.
Four of the twelve pilot projects that were started under the BEI have been finished. The port gets royalties from the company’s activities or innovations in return for cash or in-kind assistance. The Port of San Diego has contributed $2.35 million in funding since the incubator’s founding.
