Snapdragon Stadium hosted its first-ever Friday night Major League Soccer game, and it was a terrible success.
First place in the Western Conference goes to San Diego FC. Nashville has four more points than SDFC despite being in second place in the Eastern Conference. The host club had to start the youngest defensive line in MLS history once more because they were missing a number of players due to injuries (Ian Pilcher, 22… Manu Duah, 20… Luca Bombino and Oscar Verhoeven, all 19).

Chucky Lozano gave SDFC a goal in the second half to win 1-0 and increase their lead over Vancouver to four points (the Whitecaps will visit Kansas City on Saturday night). San Diego is cruising all the way to the playoffs with nine games remaining. SDFC has a greater than 99% probability of qualifying for the postseason as an expansion team, according to the website playoffstatus.com.

San Diego’s All-Stars helped them score after the first half ended without a goal. Anders Dreyer received a long pass from Jeppe Tverskov. Chucky Lozano scored the game’s lone goal after the league’s top assister skillfully dropped a pass to him.

It briefly appeared as though SDFC would win by two goals. Paddy McNair stopped a shot that was headed deep into Nashville territory in the eighth minute of stoppage time. The referee waved off the goal after the block, but Dreyer outran the visitors and scored an empty-netter.
