Some residents of Sherman Oaks recently had their lives made terrible by a flatbed tow truck driver who crashed a pickup into another parked truck, then knocked down a utility pole and turned off the neighborhood’s electricity.
Around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, the event was caught on a Nest camera and is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department as a hit-and-run and attempted auto theft.
In the dramatic video, a pickup truck hangs perilously from its bed while the tow truck screeches around a turn. As the dangling pickup collides with another parked truck and pulls it down the street before colliding with a utility pole, the tow truck driver seems to lose control. The flatbed driver hurries off as the impact knocks the towing truck to the ground.
Residents in the 13000 block of Cumpston Street were awakened by the disturbance.
According to a person who talked to The Times but would not provide their identity, “I knew it was a crash, but I didn’t know what exactly was going on.”
Someone had seen the tow truck driver pull over and ring the doorbell of a house where a dark-colored pickup was parked before to the collision, the resident told The Times. The tow truck driver started loading the truck onto the flatbed when no one responded. However, the resident told The Times that they were interrupted when someone in the house woke up and challenged him.
The resident claims that without fastening the weight, the tow truck driver hopped into the car and drove off.
Detectives obtained several complaints from the incident for a hit-and-run and vehicle theft, and the LAPD said the flatbed driver appeared to have lost control as he sped away. Before the Department of Water and Power fixed the utility pole on Sunday, residents were without power for a few hours.
According to the resident, there are kids living in this peaceful area. That no one was out when this occurred is such a blessing.
